I discovered Roann for the first time on a road trip route and was immediately enthusiastic about the quiet atmosphere. The small streets, clear water and historic buildings offer plenty of photo opportunities. For hobby photographers, the city is a real secret tip because you can work here without crowds. Personally, I like the play of light and shadow over the fields in summer. And yes, Sightseeing in Roann are a reason enough to plan the trip.

The Golden Hour provides warm, soft light that flatters almost every motive. The Sunset over the few high-rise buildings of the surrounding area creates dramatic colors in the sky. The historical Stockdale Mill is another highlight that is great for detail. The old mill wheel and the brick façade offer interesting textures, especially with laterally incident light. The Mill is open from May to October, entry is free, but a small donation fee is accepted. For the best picture, you should Blue Hour use and hold the illuminated building with a long exposure time. Local Note: Right behind the Mill there is a small field path from which you can photograph the building with the sunset in the background.
The Eel River Wildlife Management Area is a vast nature reserve that houses numerous bird and plant species. For nature and landscape photographers, the area is a real paradise, especially in spring when the wild flowers blossom. Access is free, the area is open 24 hours a day, but it is recommended to visit early in the morning not to disturb the animals. You will find the best lighting conditions during the Civil Twilightwhen the soft light dips the water surfaces in soft colors. An insider proof: The old wooden ridge on the southern shore offers excellent views of the river and surrounding forests.
The Walter H. and E. Marie Myers Nature Preserve lies something outside of Roann, but is a hidden jewel for photographers. The Preserve offers a network of hiking trails, small streams and an open field that is covered by wild flowers in the summer. The entrance is free, the opening hours are from sunrise to sunset. For colour-intensive recordings Golden Hourwhen the light dips the flowers into bright tones. Local tip: At the highest point of the Preserve you have a wide view over the valley – ideal for panoramic sunsets.
The Laketon Public Access Site is a small lake that looks spectacular especially at sunset. The calm water reflects the colour play of the sky and creates ideal conditions for long-term exposures. Access is free, the area is open 24 hours a day, but entering after dark is allowed only with flashlight. The Blue Hour provides a deep blue that is ideal for night photography. Insider proof: On the west side of the lake there is a small wooden ridge from which you can capture the mirror image of the sky perfectly.
The Laketon Bog Nature reserve is a moorland with unusual plants and an almost mystical atmosphere. The moss-covered areas and the diffuse light in the spring offer unique motifs. The Preserve is open all year round, but there are no official opening hours – a visit in the early morning is recommended to enjoy the peace. For the best picture use the Civil TwilightWhen the soft light light lights the fog over the moor slightly. A local tip: The small wooden path along the northern edge leads to a viewpoint from which you can capture the bog in its entirety.
The Field of Dreams Ball Park is an unusual photo pot because it is a small baseball field in the middle of fields – an image that reminds of film scenes. The park is free and has no fixed opening hours, but you will find the best lighting conditions during the Golden Hour** when the light dips the grass areas into warm gold. For night recordings you can Blue Hour use when the field is illuminated by the few lights of the environment. Insider proof: On the stands there is an old wooden construction that serves as the foreground for wide landscape images.

Delphi is just half an hour north. The old railway bridge over the Wabash is rough, especially in the morning fog. There you can catch the silhouettes of tractors that pass in the background.
However, the town of Peru is not only known for its university. The headstone pavements in the historic district offer nice perspectives when you look from a narrow alley to the main road. A few abandoned shop windows give the image a slightly weathered charm.
West Lafayette, directly opposite Lafayette, has the Purdue Campus feeling. The modern laboratory buildings are contrasted with the old brick houses in the city centre. Especially the light plays between the glass facades are a good motive for long-term exposures.
Despite this, Lafayette sometimes has a little overrun, but the neighborhood around 4th Street still has a few hidden graffiti walls. The colors are not always perfect, but this gives the image character.
Crawfordsville is a bit further south. The old courthouse with its dome is a classic photo motif that can be taken from different angles. The nearby Sugar Creek offers quiet water surfaces that create reflections of trees and bridges.
Kokomo is a bit bigger, but the city center has a few abandoned factory buildings that still show their rusty steel beams. When the light comes from behind, interesting shadow lines arise.
Warwick, a small village on the edge of the Tippecanoe River, has an old mill park. The mill itself is no longer in operation, but the wood and the water give off a nostalgic picture. You can also sample long-term exposures from the flowing river.
Logansport, a little further west, has the famous "Logansport Bridge". The bridge over the Wabash is a good motive for silhouettes at sunset. The river underneath sometimes reflects the light almost like a mirror.
In short, The surroundings of Roann offer enough different architectures and natural scenes to make the photo tag varied. Just take the car, take a few stops and see what's on the lookout.
