Honestly, if you're looking for “Roann Sights”, you don't get a tourist-mega complex, but a piece of Indiana that secretly sticks to its own history. Roann was born in the 1850s when the railroad ran the prairie and a small railway station named after a local railway engineer – that was the nonplusultra of excitement at that time. Today the town is still in the heart of Paw Paw Township, Wabash County, and looks like a forgotten chapter that I like to hit again.
I usually drive by car over State Road 16, because the bus here is rather a myth, and this is also good: the journey through the endless corn fields is almost meditative. Once you're in the center, the old town hall has more charm than any modern glass facade. I don't quite understand the hype about hip cafes, but the little diner on Main Street has the best milkshake I've ever tasted – no joke.
A short trip to the nearby Wabash River lets you feel the quiet side of the county; a few old fishing boats swing there as if they were waiting for better times. And yes, if you're wondering if there's anything to see here – the Roann sights that I personally appreciate most are just those inconspicuous corners that you can only find if you're not looking for the next Instagram spot.
I have to confess that the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Roann, Roann Covered Bridge is a crunching relic from 1877, which spans the sluggish Eel River. I stood there for the first time when a rainstorm pulled over the field and the wood almost began to squeak under my feet. The playground is not particularly spectacular, but the swing that still dates from 1972 has a certain charm. And the best thing: The little lake in the park is a popular spot for ducks who watch you with an undamaged critical snatter as if they judge your choice of the sandwich.
For those who prefer to be active, Eel River an underestimated jewel. I rented a kayak there and I paddled down a few hours while the sun glittered over the fields. The river is not wild, but enough to offer a bit of adventure – and fishing is almost a local sport here. If you're lucky, you'll meet one of the old fishermen who tell you they've been fishing here since the 1960s and still know the best places.
Another highlight that I cannot overlook is the Roann Farmers Marketwhich takes place every Wednesday in the parking lot of the old town hall. I tried some fresh strawberries there that were so sweet that I almost forgot that I was looking for a souvenir. The market stands are a collection of homemade jams, handmade ceramics and occasional live music acts that make the whole a small festival.
Last but not least, Paw Paw Township Historical Society Museum, a tiny building that houses more dust than exhibition pieces – but that's what makes the charm. I found an old diary that was handwritten by a farmer from the 1880s. Reading was like a look through a keyhole in the past, and I had to smile because the concerns of people were amazingly similar to today.
The first stop of my little Odyssey was the Mississinewa Lake, a huge reservoir, which is located about 20 km southeast of Roann in the countryside. I spent a weekend with my old kayak, and the water was so clear that you could almost see your own mirror image – no joke, that was almost too beautiful to be true. The boat dock is well signposted, parking is usually easy as long as you do not arrive on Friday night, then the field is quickly overrun by families with barbecue odour. fishing is a must here; I have a huge bass on the fishing, which was almost as big as my breakfast egg.

I have to admit, I was skeptical if a small museum in a small town really has something to offer – and then I suddenly stood in front of an original railway signal that was still crumbling as if it were calling the train to the next city. The staff is friendly but not exaggerated, and parking behind the museum is almost always free, except when a local flea market starts.
The Wabash River Heritage Trail sounds like a sleeping dragon along the river and offers cyclists and walkers a welcome change from asphalt. I tried the route from Roann to the city of Wabash; the paths are well maintained, and the signs are so discreet that you almost feel that you are alone with the ducks on the shore. Most of the trail entrances and exits have small parking spaces, which, however, get crowded quickly on the weekend – a good timing is crucial if you don't want to be in traffic.
An architectural highlight that you should not overlook is that Wabash County Courthouse. The imposing brick building from 1881 dominates the city centre of Wabash and looks like it just left a Hollywood film set. I have visited the dome – yes, it is possible to clean as long as you are not too loud – and the inner walls are decorated with artistic wood panels that relocate every visitor to the time when judges still wrote with feathers. Parking is possible directly in front of the building, but the places are small, so better to be there early.
If you are in the area in the summer, you can Wabash County Fairgrounds do not miss. The annual County Fair is a colorful mess of rides, local food stands and a lot of people complaining about the weather because it is always too hot. I tried the famous caramel apple piece there – it was sweet, sticky and somehow the perfect symbol for the rural Indiana. The grounds have a huge parking area, which is already full on Friday afternoons, so better arrive by car early.
A little further north lies the sleepy town Lagrofor its historical Mississinewa Canal is known. I made a small boat tour where we drove past old locks that still work as if they were from a museum. The atmosphere is almost nostalgic, and the locals like to tell stories about the time when the channel was the backbone of trade. Parking on the canal is usually free, but on weekends it can become a bit full of angling.
Last but not least a short trip to Wabash River even, more precisely to the popular fishing spot “River Bend” near the city of Wabash. I spent an early morning there while the sun rose above the water and the fish began to snap on the hook. Access is possible via a small but well-preserved web, and parking is right next to the river where you could almost bury your car in the mud if you are not careful.
Whether you are looking for outdoor adventures, historical depth or just for a place to enjoy a cool beer, the surroundings of Roann have more to offer than you would suspect at first glance. The mix of nature, history and local lifestyle makes the region a underestimated jewel in the heart of Indiana.
