If you're coming from Indianapolis by car, just follow the I‐69 up to exit 124, then a short stroller over County Road 44 – no wonder I'm always in a dam because I know the area too well. I don't quite understand the hype about the annual pumpkin show, but the small café on Main Street, which has been run by the same family since 1903, is really great; her apple cake could even appease the hardest critic. And yes, the old railway museum next to the town hall is not a must, but a nice trip if you have enough of the usual tourist traps. So, grab your curiosity and let Mount Summit surprise you – this is my recommendation, not a joke.

I swear, the thing has more character than some hipster café in Berlin, and that's not just about the weathered bricks, but about the stories that slumber there. The impressive 19th building Century dominates the skyline of New Castle and looks as if it had survived the time to remind us that laws are not just paperwork. I took a short walk there, while an older gentleman in a suit that looked like he was coming directly from a historical film, telling me about the court proceedings of the 1920s – a real historical smuggling that you did not find in the guide.
A little fresh air? The New Castle Riverwalk along the West Fork of the White River is a narrow but fine path that is perfect for an afternoon snap. I discovered an old fishing boat that seems to be on the shore for decades and wondered if it was an art project or just a forgotten hobby. The best thing: parking is right at the entrance, and you can immediately jump onto the wooden planks without long looking for a free space.

I discovered a small café that serves the best apple cake in the region – a sweet consolation after the rough wind I felt on my way there. The road is lined by restored houses that look like they were stolen directly from a set of films, and parking is almost always free thanks to a small side street.
