But Rossmoyne is not just a relic from the pioneering period. The road that leads through the village is lined with old half-timbered houses that tell more stories than any city tour. When you arrive by car over the State Route 128, immediately notice that the approach is almost a ritual – the slow rolling through corn fields, the occasional horns of a tractor and the quiet marbles of the inhabitants complaining about the weather. I don’t understand the hype about the “rustic idyll”, but the honest hospitality that brought me a freshly baked maize bread during the first visit was really great. And yes, if you are looking for a place where the pace of life is still measured, then Rossmoyne is just the right thing – a small jewel that doesn't get too much about the splendour of the big cities.
Welcome to a region that you could easily overlook if you don't accidentally look into the back mirror while you leave the 71 motorway – Rossmoyne, a tiny spot in Sycamore Township, Ohio, which has more charm than you would suspect at first sight. I have to admit that I have never fully understood the hype around the big metropolises, but here, between the simple row houses and the endless lawn areas, you will find some real treasures that I do not want to deprive you of.
Top of my list Rossmoyne Park. Those who come to Rossmoyne for the first time will immediately notice that this small town park has more to offer than a few benches and a playground. The lawn is surprisingly well maintained, the paths are wide enough to cruise with the bike, and the small pond inhabited by ducks is a perfect place to start a picnic – provided that you are lucky not to be overrun by a horde of jogging seniors. Parking is usually easy, except on Saturday night, there will be a real problem because then the weekly barbecue will take place and everyone tries to get a place.
A short walk further (or a short sprint if you have a hurry) leads you to Rossmoyne Community Center. I don't quite understand the hype around Community Center – it's basically just a big building with a gym, a small gym and a room where the local senior community plays Bingo. Nevertheless, if you happen to be watching a Tuesday night, you can experience an improvised jazz-open mix that is surprisingly good. The entrance area has a small café area where you get a coffee that is strong enough to bring you through the next round of “Karaoke for Beginners”.
Another highlight that I like to visit is the Rossmoyne Librarya branch of the Cincinnati Public Library. The shelves are not overcrowded, but the staff is friendly and knows everyone who borrows a book – this is almost scary. I found an old copy of “The Great Gatsby” there, which was apparently donated by an earlier resident of the street. If you are looking for a little rest, put yourself in the reading corner on the window; the light is perfect for scrolling through sides, while outside a light wind blows through the trees.
Between the quiet streets of Rossmoyne and the bustling shopping centers of Cincinnati a small but fine access to the Little Miami Scenic Trail. I didn't plan to do this, but I just walked off my bike from the park and suddenly landed on the trail that runs along the Little Miami River. The path is well marked, the asphalt is smooth and the view of the river is almost too beautiful to be true. A short trip leads to a small viewpoint where you can shoot a few photos without the crowds of tourists appearing in the background.
For those who prefer to travel with a racket in the hand, there is Sycamore Hills Golf Club. Although the golf course is technically somewhat outside the real limits of Rossmoyne, it is practically part of the local lifestyle. I once played a 9-hole game with a few neighbors; the green is well maintained, and the clubhouse serves a burger that tastes better than you would expect. Parking is a bit tricky because the clubhouse is often overrun by events, but a bit of patience pays off.
A little off the usual paths, but definitely a must for those who want to experience the authentic Rossmoyne is the small but fine Rossmoyne Community Garden. Hobby gardeners meet here to cultivate tomatoes, pumpkins and one or other exotic herb. I met an old man there who told me that he has been working there for over 30 years and that the best harvests always come when one “waters the plants with a little jazz music”. This may sound like a joke, but the quality of the vegetables is actually impressive – and the vegetables taste when you try it freshly from the beet, better than anything you find in the supermarket.
If you now think that this is all too much to find it in a small suburb, then you probably don't have the Rossmoyne Attractions in its entirety. Each of these places has its own character, and together they give an image of a place that does not seem spectacular at first glance, but reveals a surprising depth when looking more closely. So, grab your bike, your favorite coffee and a little curiosity – Rossmoyne is waiting, and it has more to offer than you would suspect at first sight.
The first place I could not miss was that Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, which is just a short drive from Rossmoyne. I watched the giraffes of a lukewarm Saturday afternoon, as they gently stretched their heads over the fences – an image that reminds me of the tranquility that can be found in the midst of the urban hustle and bustle. Parking is usually easy, except on Saturday night, there will be a real problem because then the families move with children.
A short detour to Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park was almost a mandatory program. The tropical air inside is a welcome contrast to the cool Ohio wind outside, and I must admit that I don't fully understand the hype around the orchid exhibition – they look beautiful, but the real outdoor plants have more charm for me. Nevertheless, if you're on your way in the rain, the greenhouse is a real rescue anchor.
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Centerthat made me a little harder heart, but at the same time triggered a deep feeling of respect. I remember standing in the exhibition on the escape routes and suddenly heard the quiet sum of the visitors who almost seemed like a collective reflection. Practically seen: The museum is located directly on the river bank, so after the visit you can take a short walk on the Ohio River Trail – this is a nice balance.
A little change? That's it. Findings That's right. I tried a freshly baked apple cake there on a Tuesday morning, which almost made me take over the whole market. The stands are full of local producers, and parking here is a small adventure: There are plenty of places when you get early enough, but in the afternoon it will be fast.
If you have enough of crowds, that is Smale Riverfront Park a perfect retreat. I made a picnic on one of the many meadows, while children were planning on the interactive water games. The park is free and the bike rental system is practical if you want to explore the route along the river.
Another highlight I didn't want to leave is that Cincinati Art Museum in Eden Park. I was there on a rainy day and fell in love with the collection of impressionist paintings – a real comfort when the weather is gray outside. The museum offers free admission days, so it is worth keeping an eye on the calendar to avoid spending unnecessary money.
For those who prefer to travel in nature, Little Miami Scenic Trail an absolute must. I explored the trail with my mountain bike and have been straightened over several kilometers through gentle hills and along the river. The path is well signposted, and there are numerous piers where you can enjoy the view. The best thing: You can reach the trail from multiple accesses, so it is easy to plan a short trip without losing the whole day.
Whether you are looking for animal encounters, historical depth, culinary discoveries or just a quiet place to shut down – the surroundings of Rossmoyne offer an impressive range of experiences.
