Those who come to Beckett Ridge for the first time will immediately notice that the neighborhood has more charm than an average Instagram filter. The arrival is easy: I take the I‐75 north, turn to the local Route 3 at Exit 30 and the sign “Welcome to Beckett Ridge” already appears – no joke, that’s almost an artwork.
A short trip to the nearby West Chester Town Center is convenient because there is a bus from Butler County Transit; You can also explore the small shops and cafes that make the neighborhood an underestimated hotspot without a car. I met my neighbor there, who told me that his dog likes the place rather than the park, because there are fewer “human warmth” on the way. The playground is located right next to a network of cycling and hiking trails, so that you can cycle a few kilometers through nature after walking – a perfect mix of activity and relaxation.
At the end of the day, when the sun goes down over the trees of the Beckett Ridge Park and the lights of the Village at Beckett Ridge begin to shine, one realizes that this suburb has more to offer than one would suspect at first sight. I leave the area every time with the feeling that I really met a little piece of Ohio – and that without ever leaving the comfort of my car.
The first place I could not miss was the Great Western Trail, a 16-kilometre piece that winds through the gentle hills of Butler County and jumps several times over old railroad tracks – a real paradise for cyclists and walkers who have enough of the ever-like suburban scenes. I exchanged my running shoes for a folding mountain bike on a sunny Saturday morning and I almost straightened to the end before I realized that parking at the Trailhead is usually easy as long as you don't get to the main traffic time.
A short detour to the north leads to Miami and Erie Canalwhere the old waterbed today as Canal Towpath served. I've heard the quiet whistle of the canal while I strolled along the gravel path and admired the historical sluices – a piece of history that you don't see every day when you're stuck in the suburbs of Cincinnati. The path is well signposted, and parking at the visitor center is a Klacks when you are there early enough.
A bit further, almost a piece outside the usual tourist paths, this is Cincinnati Nature Center in Milford. I was there in autumn, when the foliage was lit in all conceivable red tones, and I almost lost myself in the treetop paths. The nature trails are wide enough that you do not stumble constantly over the fallen branches, and the visitor center even offers a small café – perfect to sneak a coffee after an exhausting hike. Parking is available in abundance, but on weekends it can be a bit crowded, so it's better to come early.
For all who love water is Hueston Woods State Park A must. The lake there is crystal clear, and I just threw myself into the cool wet on a hot July-day – no joke, the water was refreshing and the surroundings so quiet that I almost forgot that I had actually planned a short trip. The park offers numerous hiking trails, and parking is free of charge at the main entrances, as long as you do not arrive with a camper, then it becomes somewhat narrow.
Back to the city, but not in Beckett Ridge itself, this is Butler County Historical Society Museum in Hamilton. I found an old map that shows how the area looked over 150 years ago – a real eye opener, considering how fast the suburbs change. The museum is small but charming, and parking right in front of the building is practically always free, because most visitors prefer to walk.
Another secret tip is the Talawanda Trail, a 12-kilometre piece, which swells through fields and small villages, passing through historic mills. I explored the trail on a windy autumn afternoon and watched a few locals gathering mushrooms – a picture that remains in my mind for a long time. The trail is well maintained and parking at the starting point is usually easy as long as you are not there on Saturday night.
Last but not least a short trip to West Chester Farmers Marketthat takes place every Saturday morning in the heart of West Chester. I tried fresh strawberries and homemade jams there, which almost led me to buy the whole market – a small luxury that you can enjoy here. The market has its own parking, but on hot summer days they fill themselves faster than a crowded bus.
