I don't understand the hype about the typical "Potsdam Sights" because I prefer to explore the quiet corners where the old brick houses still tell about the time you only hear when you're standing on a street corner and listening to the noise of the nearby Little Miami River. The bus to Dayton travels every 30 minutes – practically if you don't have your own car, and the bike is a real life savior here, because the streets are so flat that you almost feel you would slide across the landscape.
A short detour to the Union Township Hall, which is still the old town hall from the 1850s, gives you the feeling of being part of a story that is not yet completely finished. And while you're standing there, you can ask yourself why so many people prefer to hang around in the big metropolises if it's so real and imperfect. No joke, this is my favorite place to escape everyday life and grab a bit of authenticity.
So, next time you drive over the highway to Ohio, let's stop right at the first corner in Potsdam – the old bank building on Main Street. I swear, the thing has more character than some hipster café in Berlin, and that's not just about the weathered bricks, but about the history that cracks there between the marble pillars. The building is a real example of neo-Gothic architecture, and the high stained glass windows cast a colorful light on the wooden pulpit. I heard a concert there from a local choir, and the acoustics was so good that I almost thought I was in a cathedral in Europe – only without the tourist crowds.
For those who like a bit of industrial charm, there is the old grain silo on the edge of the city. It is no longer in operation, but the rusty structure is a popular photo motif for Instagram users looking for “authentic” backgrounds. Nevertheless, if you are there early enough, you can enjoy the peace on the eastern shore, while an old angler tells me about his youth when he paddled over the lake with a self-built canoe. Parking is generous at the western end, rather cramped at the eastern end, so better choose the first parking lot.
The Miami University-Campus atmosphere is another highlight that I cannot leave. The old brick buildings almost look like a film set from the 1930s, and the student life pulsates between the auditoriums and the cafés. Once in autumn I attended a lecture on local history, and while the lecturer spoke about the founding of Union Township, a squirrel shimmers through the aula – a sign that nature never disappears completely from the picture. For visitors there are free parking on the outskirts of the campus, but most places are quickly occupied when the lecture period begins.
If you have enough of concrete, the Little Miami Scenic Trail directly through the countryside and offers a perfect mix of cycling and hiking. I tried the route once with my old mountain bike; the route is well developed, but in some places it is necessary to jump over old field paths that become muddy slides after rain. The trail is freely accessible, and parking at the trail entry points is usually easy – apart from the weekends when local families occupy the entire route.
A short detour into Miami County Historical Museum provides a surprisingly deep insight into the history of the region. I was there because I thought it was just a dusty museum, but the interactive exhibits about the early settlers and the railway that drove through Union Township really tied me up. The museum is located in a renovated old bank building, and parking is right in front of the door, which is almost too much for a small museum – so better to be there early.
The Miami County Courthouse is another architectural jewel you should not overlook. The impressive brick building from the 19th century Century is proudly located in the centre of Troy, just a short drive from Potsdam. I once observed a trial there – not exactly what you expected in a guide, but the atmosphere was fascinating, and the tour through the historic stairway was a real eye-catcher. Parking is nearby, but they are often occupied by residents, so a little patience is required.
Once a year, Miami County Fairgrounds in a colourful spectacle of rides, local crafts and a lot of people who argue about the weather while eating sugar cane. I visited my sister there for the first time in the summer of 2019, and we almost pulled up our knees in a tractor race – an experience you don't forget. The site offers enough parking, but on the main days there can be a small chaos when the visitor numbers go into the thousands.
For nature lovers Miami University Arboretum a quiet retreat that is hardly overrun by tourists. I spent a few hours there to just count the trees and think about life – a bit cheesy, but the rest is real. Access is free, and parking is possible at the small visitor center, but it has few places, so better to be there early if you want to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Last but not least, Great Miami River- Don't forget kayak experience. I drove the water once in spring when the weather was cool and the water was clear – a perfect moment to see the surrounding fields from a different perspective. Access to the river is possible at several places, and parking is usually uncomplicated as long as you do not get to the high season.
