Harmony is a small town in the heart of Indiana that surprises with wide avenues and charming façades. For hobby photographers, the mix of historical architecture and open green spaces is a real place of discovery. I like Harmony because people are loose here and you immediately feel like being part of the community. The Sightseeing in Harmony offer enough variety to capture any type of image – from city panoramas to quiet natural images.
I'm planning to shoot the picture that catches the moment the city wakes up from the twilight. The Civil Twilight the first lights of the street cafés – ideal for silhouettes. The Golden Hour provides warm, diffuse light that makes facades and parking benches glow. The Sunset over the few buildings creates dramatic shadows, especially from Craig Park Military Plaza out. In Blue Hour long-term exposures of illuminated bridges and the river can be captured well. The map tool by poi‐travel.de, which is embedded in this text, shows the position of the sun, the azimuth and the direction line – practically to plan the perfect angle.
The historic city centre is the central Landmark by Harmony. Headstone pavement, restored brick building and the old town hall form a classic cityscape. Especially photogenic is the main road at sunrise when the light dips the facades into gold. Opening hours: around the clock, no entrance. Best time for recordings: early in the morning or shortly after Golden Hour. Insider tip: From the corner of Main & First Street you have a clear view of the City Hall Tower detail, which is well suited for vertical compositions.
The park is a popular Landmark for natural and urban photography. A small lake reflects the light while old oaks form silhouettes in the background. In summer there is a weekly art and music event that provides additional light sources. Opening hours: daily 6 am to 22 pm, free admission. Ideal for recordings during Blue Hourwhen the water reflects the blue of the sky. Insider tip: The wooden ridge at the north end of the lake offers a perfect foreground for long term exposures.
This old theatre is a cultural Landmark with a striking neon facade. Inside there are artistic stucco works, outside an illuminated marquee that shines at night. Opening hours: performances from 7 p.m., during the day only to visit from outside, admission free. For the picture: The Golden Hour lets the marquee dip into warm light while the road is still in the shade. Insider tip: From the opposite alley you get the complete shield without disturbing cars in the picture.
A small town park that serves as a quiet retreat and at the same time an important Landmark for urban landscapes. Colorful flower beds, a historical fountain and a playground offer varied motifs. Opening hours: 7 a.m.–20 a.m., free admission. The best light mood arises shortly after Civil Twilightwhen the parking lamps emit warm light. Insider tip: The path along the eastern wall leads to a hidden bench corner that is ideal for portraits in the dam light.
A larger green area with hiking trails, a small waterfall and old beech. The natural environment makes the park a versatile Landmark for landscape and macro photography. Opening hours: 6 am to 22 pm, free admission. The waterfall is especially in Golden Hour impressive because the light captures the falling water in gold tones. Insider tip: On the highest viewpoint there is a panoramic view over the city, perfect for wide city panoramas at sunset.
The place is an official Landmark with a monument to veterans and wide paved paths. The monumental statue has a particularly strong effect on counterlight. Opening hours: 24 hours, free admission. For the picture: The Sunset-Stimmation lets the monument dip in deep red while the surrounding trees form silhouettes. Insider tip: From the south side of the square you can frame the monument with the background of the city top.
A small but fine park right next to the Military Plaza, which is more quiet Landmark-Spot for detailed recordings. Colorful flower beds and a fountain offer interesting textures. Opening hours: 7 am to 21 pm, free admission. The best time is Blue Hourwhen the light of the fountain shines in the dark. Insider tip: The path along the west side leads to a small wooden bridge that perfectly reflects the water of the well.
A nature reserve just outside the city, which is important Landmark for animal and landscape photography. Here you can photograph local birds, beavers and wide wetlands. Opening hours: 5 am to 23 pm, free admission. The best shots occur during the Golden Hourwhen the light makes the water shimmer golden. Insider tip: The old wooden ridge on the southern shore offers a low angle of view, ideal for reflections of the sky and water.

Just a short trip to Bloomington and you have the Indiana University campus in front of the lens – old brick building, a bit of graffiti, the light that falls through the trees. The atmosphere is loose, the image material sometimes acts somewhat overrun, but this is part of the charm.
However, it is worth a trip to Nashville, Indiana. There is a small railway museum showing old locomotives. The metal structures and the rusty finish give an interesting contrast play to the wide fields.
If you're on rivers, go to Corydon. The Ohio River offers quiet morning moods, fog over the water and a few old docks that seem almost forgotten. Perfect for long-term exposures when the light is right.
Nevertheless, you should not overlook the city of Columbus. There are some modern sculptures made of concrete that look almost like natural forms. The city is quite relaxed, but the works of art can seem surprisingly strong when you photograph them from unusual angles.
A short stop in New Albany gives you the chance to shoot the Louisville skyline from the Indiana bug. The view over the river is not overloaded, rather a calm background for city lights at dusk.
In short, The town of Madison on Ohio River has a historic neighborhood with old brick houses. The alleys are narrow, the light often falls obliquely, which throws shadows, which seem almost painted.
A bit further south is French Lick. There is an old spa town building that is overgrown by Efeu. The combination of façades and lush green is a bit melancholic, but that makes the photos interesting.
For fans of industrial motives, the city of Bedford is worth a visit. There are old quarries that offer huge open areas. The light there is hard, the structures are massive – a good counterpart to the gentle fields further west.
