And yes, if you ask where you can drink something in the evening, the local diner is small, but the service knows your name after the third visit – a service that you rarely find today.

A sunny afternoon at the Indian Lake, just about 20 miles north of Valley Hi, is what I prefer after a long working day – not only because the water glistens like a cheap cocktail-glass decoration, but because here the true “Lake-Life” pulsates. I once tried to borrow a canoe, and the staff served me with a smile that was almost as wide as the lake itself; Parking is almost always a Klack, except when the annual Angler Festival starts and then the field turns into a battlefield of caravans and barbecue odour.
A short detour to the east leads to the Zane Shawnee Caverns, a cave system hidden under the small town of Zanesfield. A bit further west, almost halfway between Logan and West Liberty, is the Ohio Caverns, the largest publicly accessible cave system in the state. I made a guided tour there, where we wandered through huge crystal caves that look like they had designed an artist from another galaxy. The entrance is not cheap, but the experience is – especially if you find yourself in one of the huge halls and the light breaks through the sparkling crystals as if a starry sky floats over you. The parking lot is large enough to grab a few family cars, and the visitor center offers snacks if you need a bit of energy after the cave run.
A short detour to Zanesfield itself is also worth it, because the small town has a charming historical core, which is almost forgotten if you don't look closely. I sat there once in a tiny cafe, which is housed in an old half-timbered house, and the only sound was the quiet crawl of porcelain, while outside the village life swells gently. The parking lot is practically right behind the café, and the whole village is on foot to explore – a perfect place to slow down the pace and enjoy the “small city feeling”.
Last but not least, the Logan County Fairgrounds, which becomes the pulsating heart of the region every year in August. I visited the annual agricultural and crafts festival there for the first time and was surprised how much more than just tractors and cattle could be seen – from local artisans to a surprisingly good live band that played country hits that even brought me to sing. The area is just a few miles south of Valley Hi, and parking is not a problem thanks to the generous areas, as long as you don't arrive on the last day of the fair, then the whole thing becomes a bit more chaotic.

The place is located directly on County Road 33, and parking is almost always a Klacks – as long as You are not there on Saturday night with the whole neighborhood, then the field will quickly become a parking chaaos. I remember my first game there: I hit the ball so sloping that he almost landed in the nearby pond, and the placekeeper laughed only and said that it was “typical beginner charms”. Nevertheless, the 18 holes are well maintained, the fairways wide enough to feel a bit of freedom, and the clubhouse serves the best coffee I've ever had in a golf club – no joke.
A short walk leads you to Valley Hi Community Centera place that is more than just a building: Here the seniors meet to bingo, the kids to karate and me to my weekly chess game with the former teacher from primary school. The center has a small gym, and the swimming pool is a real secret tip in the summer – most visitors think it's a private pool because hardly anyone talks about it. The old school building from the 1950s has no more lessons, but the municipality uses it for art exhibitions and local markets. Last year I discovered a pop-up festival where local craftsmen sold their homemade candles and an old man from the neighborhood offered his homemade jams. The building has a charming retro fan, and parking is always sufficient thanks to the surrounding school parking spaces.
